Norwegian steps in to help Canadian

While 29-year-old Canadian cross-country ski athlete Sara Renner from Canmore, Alberta was skiing her third of four laps in the team sprint at Mount Albergian in Pragelato Plan, Italy, (she was skiing in second place behind Sweden), she accidentally broke her left pole, dropping her to fourth. Mr. Bjornar Hakensmoen, the chief of the Norwegian cross-country ski federation, saw it happen, and rushed to hand her another. "I saw (Ms. Renner's) pole was broke, and I took one of our own poles and gave it to her. He humbly said, "This is a small, small thing. Hopefully, she's happy."

He said it's his team's policy to help other teams out. "That's done across the nations. It's for the good of the sport. We need to help each other. We have a policy in the Norwegian cross-country ski program that, if a skier from another country needs equipment, we have to help. ... It doesn't matter (that Norway finished fourth). We need to compete on a fair course."
